Ayabonga was last seen leaving a restaurant in Umhlanga, Durban, in the early hours of 25 December, accompanied by a male companion. After she did not return home, a kidnapping case was filed, leading to the suspect’s arrest following meticulous police investigations.
Premier Ntuli emphasized the urgency of ensuring justice prevails.
“The brutal killing of Ayabonga Mjilo is a stark reminder of the challenges we face in our mission to end gender-based violence,” he said.
He urged the judiciary to impose the harshest penalties on those convicted of such heinous acts.
Ntuli called upon community leaders, traditional authorities, Izinduna, amaButho, and every citizen to unite against the violence plaguing women and children.
Stressing the importance of collective action, Ntuli highlighted the critical role of traditional leadership and community structures in fostering safety and respect.
Premier Ntuli vowed to join Ayabonga’s family at the Durban Magistrates Court on Monday, 6 January, where the suspect will face charges of kidnapping, murder, and defeating the ends of justice.
