The 23-year-old Mozambican national was arrested in Moroka, Soweto, on Thursday, 30 January. She’s facing charges of kidnapping and defeating the ends of justice following an intelligence-driven operation.

According to the police, the woman was reported kidnapped in Randburg, north of Joburg on 23 January, after which a ransom demand was made to her family.
Police spokeswoman Lieutenant-Colonel Amanda van Wyk said a multidisciplinary team comprising of the SAPS’ Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Crime Intelligence, Gauteng Provincial Investigation Unit (PIU), Johannesburg Flying Squad, and Randburg Detectives, with support from private security companies, acted on intelligence regarding the suspect’s location.
“The operation led the team to an identified address in Moroka, where both the supposed victim and her alleged kidnapper were found,” Van Wyk said.
Further investigation revealed that the kidnapping was staged by both the woman and her kidnapper.
They were subsequently arrested, and the investigation is ongoing.
