THE internet has unlocked numerous career opportunities.

However, it has also become breeding ground for negativity, with online trolls causing heartache for many.

Actress Cynthia Erivo recently addressed the damaging effects of cyberbullying, urging people to treat one another with kindness.

Her heartfelt comments came during an intimate “In Conversation” session with fans and film enthusiasts at the Red Sea International Film Festival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The 37-year-old singer and actress from London, United Kingdom, gained recognition for starring in Broadway revival of The Color Purple from 2015 to 2017, for which she won the 2016 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical and a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album.

She’s also a lead actor for the latest movie Wicked, alongside Ariana Grande.

Cynthia said cyberbullying is dangerous.

“It’s easy to sit behind a computer and type words about someone you don’t know. I think the more we can protect ourselves from that, the better.”

She suggested people should aim to be a counterpoint to whatever online negativity they encounter.

“If it’s something to do with looks or what others think of you, then be the voice that speaks positively. Actually, a person who makes comments on the internet isn’t as important as what you say to yourself.”

The actress expressed anger towards those who mistreat others.

“Kindness costs nothing. Even if you don’t agree with something or dislike it, you can still be kind,” she said.

Cynthia also spoke about her role in Wicked and shared her enjoyment of working with singer Ariana.

She said they committed to protecting each other.

“We ensured we would support one another and build a relationship, so when we were on set, we felt safe to play and perform our roles as needed.”
