Thabang Tabane’s funeral service was held at Mamelodi Community Hall, Tshwane, on Saturday, 8 February.

Family, friends, and colleagues gathered to say their final goodbyes to a beloved family member and friend.

The service was an emotional event, but also a celebration of Thabang’s life.

Thabang (45) passed away after a brief illness on Wednesday, 29 January.

Fellow artists described him as someone loving and humorous.

Musician Paepae Mmekwa paid tribute to Thabang, saying, “Thabang welcomed the gift of being a percussionist, and he has gone with it. Thabang’s spirit remains alive with his beautiful smile.”

He recalled playing drums alongside Thabang’s father and other music legends.

“We all tapped into the spirit of malombo,” he said.

Thandiswa Mazwai, who worked with Thabang for 18 years, mentioned the deep impact of his loss.

“Thabang was a genius. We are so sad he is gone. He was obviously a precisionist in the band. We’ll remember his jokes. He was always in a good mood. He valued love and peace deeply,” Thandiswa said.

Artist Macks Senatla Papo shared, “I feel sad and also feel that he went too soon. He’s gone too soon.”

He spoke of his closeness with Thabang’s father, Dr Philip Tabane.

“The malombo legacy will continue, as Thabang’s two children are also in the music circle,” he added.

“It’s not easy to lose him, but we celebrate his life,” Dr Kgafela wa Magogodi said.

Various drummers and percussionists celebrated Thabang’s life through heartfelt performances.”
