IN a dramatic twist, Sibusiso Mahlangu made a shocking confession in the Kasi Bester Case, stunning the Gauteng High Court and his own defence counsel.

“I’d clear my conscience even with a life sentence,” he declared on Tuesday, 27 January.

Sibusiso confessed to all charges of murder, conspiracy to murder, and fraud without prior consultation with his lawyer, Nthabiseng Serabele.

This sudden admission contradicted the two years of denial, as the court had already found him guilty in December 2024.

Sibusiso admitted his previous statements were lies, stating: “Everything I have said in my chief of evidence was a lie.”

Right now, I want to be afforded an opportunity to start all over again and be a better man, not just for me, but for my children too.”

However, State Prosecutor Vusimuzi Tshabalala argued that Sibusiso lacked remorse and was seeking a lighter sentence.

Sibusiso claimed he wanted to give the victim’s family closure.

“The family of the deceased needed closure. I’m only doing this for them,” he said, accepting whatever punishment the court decides.

The courtroom was filled with emotions as Sibusiso’s mother sobbed in disbelief over her son’s confession.

Victim’s brother, Xolani Sitebe, rejected Sibusiso’s apology.

“Mahlangu can take his apology and shove it where the sun doesn’t shine. I’ll never forgive him. He’s not sorry, just using the word to avoid accountability. I don’t believe he’s sorry,” he said.

Sitebe insisted more people were involved in the crime and should be held accountable.

The deceased’s girlfriend, Lerato Mphefo, also dismissed Sibusiso’s apology.

“I won’t accept his apology in this lifetime. They planned all this and just changed their story now that they’re about to be sentenced,” she said, wishing for life imprisonment for them.

Judge Papi Mosopa adjourned the matter to Wednesday, 28 January, for Lerato Mahlangu’s final remarks before sentencing.
