— nhlanhla (@KhomolaNhlanhla) January 27, 2025THE Protea Magistrates Court has granted the controversial sangoma, Gogo Maweni R5 000 bail.
The state charged her with providing false information during her first appearance and the initial bail application on Monday, 20 January.
This after the 38-year-old sangoma, whose real name is Makhotso Mofokeng, appeared in court on Monday, 27 January, for her bail application.
She’s facing charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, dating back to 2019.
Before bail was granted, the court heard that Maweni had previous convictions.
In October 2009, Maweni was found guilty of contravention of the Road Traffic Act and was sentenced to a suspended sentence of two years.
“On the 29th of September 2017, the accused was found guilty of assault and received a sentence of R500 or three months, which was suspended for five years. On the 24th of July 2018, she was found guilty of fraud, and the sentence was handed down to R20 000 – or six months imprisonment. It was then suspended to three years,” said state prosecutor Sandra Mntambo.
Mntambo further told the court that another case of theft was opened on 22 July 2018.
“R10 000 fine or three months imprisonment was handed over, and the case was suspended,” she added.
The state did not oppose bail.

“If the court grants the applicant bail, can it please consider that?”
Reading an affidavit written by the investigative officer, the state prosecutor said: “Makhotso Mofokeng, also known as Gogo Maweni, has previous convictions for the same offence she is now charged with. She was arrested and charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and for this case, the accused was then convicted on the charge and sentenced to three years imprisonment, which was suspended for five years.
“It is upon this ground that I oppose that the accused be released on bail. If the court arrived at a different conclusion other than the one that I stated. If bail is granted, the accused must surrender her travel documents to the state since she committed the crime within the five-year suspension,” she said.
Though the state didn’t oppose bail, the accused’s attorney, Advocate Riaan Gissing, fought hard to convince the court that the accused wasn’t a repeat offender and a flight risk.
He told the court that the medication that has been given to the accused in prison makes her nauseous and causes her to vomit, which he said is not good for her unborn twins.

Reading the affidavit, Gissing said that the accused was traumatised and confused after her arrest.
He revealed that the complainant in this case is the cousin of Maweni’s third-born child’s father.
Magistrate Rozelle Khiye postponed the matter to 11 February for disclosure of the content of the docket.
Gogo Maweni has been ordered to inform the investigation officer whenever she travels outside Gauteng and the country.
