— Aaron Dube (@AronDube) March 4, 2025According to Sergeant Mabele Mahlakwane, the executive of TMPD doesn’t consider them when there is a promotion.Â
“We are overlooked. We are allowed to act as supervisors. These are senior sergeants and constables. They promote the new police officers.”Â
Sergeant Mahlakwane said there are allegations of bribery and corruption.Â
He further said that they are accusing the executives of demanding sexual favours from female officers.Â
The aggrieved officers said they started complaining about these allegations in January 2025.Â
“This is demoralising. I have been working at TMPD for 25 years with qualifications and experience, and I have not been promoted,” Mahlakwane said.Â

He said the promotion must consider officers who have been in service for many years.Â
Sergeant Themba Nkabinde noted that the city advertised positions for warrant officers, attracting numerous applications.Â
“The promotion was not fairly conducted. Many young people were promoted.Â
“There were allegations that others paid R40 000 to get promoted,” he said.Â

Sergeant Nkabinde said some have been constables for 23 years, including those at higher levels.Â
“We want the management to do the right thing in our case. Our wish was for the process to be stopped and rectified.”Â
He said 432 officers expressed dissatisfaction and wished to move up ranks.Â
For instance, constables should be promoted to sergeants.Â
Sergeant Matilda Kgope said: “I have been a sergeant for 12 years. We need clear criteria to be used.”Â

— Aaron Dube (@AronDube) March 4, 2025TMPD spokesman Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said these allegations of R40 000 were not true.Â
“We are dealing with police here, and they know how to handle corruption issues. If there are allegations of corruption involved, they must report the cases.”Â
Mahamba said there are no cases of corruption reported to them or SAPS.Â
He also said they had not received any formal complaints.Â
Mahamba said they recommended 120 officers and that the process started in November 2024 and ended in January 2025.
