Police spokeswoman Lieutenant-Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa said the cops’ operation in Msobomvu ended in the fatal shooting of a wanted suspect following an armed confrontation with the police.
“It’s alleged that on 28 January 2025, at about 11.50am, members of the Butterworth Crime Intelligence Unit were actively following information regarding a 50-year-old male suspect linked to multiple serious crimes, including murder, house robbery, and armed robbery,” she said.
Mawisa said the suspect was spotted catching a taxi on the Msobomvu route to Bika, and immediately the members called for backup from the Msobomvu cop shop.
Cops attached to Detective and Visible Policing swiftly responded, tracking the taxi until it stopped to offload passengers at Cuba Township, Butterworth.
“As police tactically moved in to arrest the suspect, he exited the vehicle armed with a pistol and opened fire on police. The members retaliated, fatally wounding the suspect on the scene. A 9mm pistol was recovered from the deceased,” she said.
