TSOTSI gogos are preying on their next target.

As a result, pupils have been urged to stay vigilant as they often fall victim to these women.

The gogos, in their 50s, target pupils walking to and from school to steal their cellphones.

They snatch cellphones and flee, often jumping into getaway cars, making it difficult to catch them.

Captain Nomsa Sekele, spokeswoman for Benoni Police, said they received complaints from pupils and their parents in the Northmead area in Benoni, Ekurhuleni.

“We urge pupils to be vigilant and not use their cellphones in the street or lend them to strangers. Recently, a high school pupil was targeted by an elderly woman who approached him, claiming her phone was flat and asked to borrow his to call her relatives as she was stranded,” Sekele said.

“The pupil, trusting her as an elderly woman, lent her his phone, only to see a getaway car stopping in front of them. The ‘stranded’ woman jumped in and fled with his cellphone. He tried to chase the car driven by another gogo, but it sped off.”

Sekele said the pupil went home to tell his gogo, and they went to Benoni Police Station to open a case.

She noted that this was not the first incident.

In October, another pupil experienced the same fate at the hands of these elderly cellphone grabbers.

“A pupil was accosted by two elderly women who strangled her for her cellphone and cash on 9 October.”

Sekele said police are still searching for the suspects believed to be members of a syndicate.
