Mopping up operations have begun in the hope to salvage beds, sofas, blankets, clothes and other belongings which were left out in the sun to dry.

A lot of families have lost hope in the functionality of their water-damaged appliances.

Over 20 car windows at Greenfields Estate, Randfontein, were smashed and homes left with ripped-off roof tops.

Contractors relocated affected tenants to available units while repairs got underway.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi confirmed relocations amid repairs.

Resident, Dineo Rantsu said: “My TV, radios, laptop, furniture, and clothes are wet. Appliances are not working. I’m not sure if government will help replace them.”

Bibi Nkonyane, whose vehicle was uninsured due to low earnings, said: “I’m concerned about where the money to fix my car would come from. I used it for work. Now, I must use taxis, which will cost me a lot.”

Belinda Stone, a Toekomsrus resident, called on government to assist in repairing houses.

“We have the national Human Settlement department, district municipality, and some local councillors are trying to help affected families. Most homes in Toekomsrus had damaged walls and roofs.”

Residents attempted to salvage damaged roof materials to provide shelter, using plastic tarps where walls were severely affected.
