POLICE are warning the public about fraudulent calls claiming to be from the SAPS Moot detectives in Tshwane.Â
Tshwane District Police, Commissioner Major-General Samuel Thine, said he is concerned about the criminal trend used by bogus detectives, falsely claiming they are representing SAPS Pretoria Moot detectives while defrauding unsuspecting members of the public.Â
“These scammers call victims and claim to be from a state agency. They then inform the victim that their cellphone is used by scammers to defraud people,” Thine said. Â
He further said the suspects then advised the victim that they could help them if they agreed to pay off a so-called standby prosecutor demanding R10 000 to resolve the matter.Â
“The phone is subsequently handed over to two suspects who claim to be detectives from the SAPS Pretoria Moot, responsible for investigating the alleged fraud case. The alleged detectives then threatened victims with imminent arrest. Victims only realise after contacting the police station that they have been scammed,” he said.Â

Thine urged the public to stay vigilant and advised them to request a case number and the police station where it was registered from anyone calling about a case. Â
He urged individuals to immediately contact the mentioned police station for verification.Â
He also reminded the public that offering or paying money to individuals to make cases disappear constitutes bribery and is a criminal offence.Â
Thine said contact details for any SAPS police station can be found on the SAPS website at www.saps.gov.za or via the MySAPS application, which is available for download on any smartphone. Â
The SAPS Pretoria Moot can be reached at 012 331 3603 or 012 331 3598.Â
