A shooting broke out between alleged illegal miners and the cops in Sabie, Mpumalanga.
AN investigation is underway after a shooting incident between alleged illegal miners and law enforcement agencies in Sabie, Mpumalanga on Thursday, 28 November.
Provincial police spokesman Brigadier Donald Mdhluli said that a team of cops and other law enforcement agencies were on routine patrol near the New Village mining shaft when they were attacked by suspected illegal miners.
“The report indicates that the alleged illegal miners fired shots at the police from various directions, injuring a warrant officer from the K9 unit, who was shot in the leg,” Mdhluli said.

“In response, law enforcement officers fired back, resulting in the deaths of three alleged illegal miners,” Mdhluli said.
Two AK-47 rifles and 500 rounds of ammunition were found at the scene.
“The injured officer was hospitalized for treatment. A case of attempted murder is under investigation, and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) is leading the probe into this incident,” Mdhluli said.
Acting Mpumalanga police commissioner Major-General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi highlighted the need for law enforcement officers to remain vigilant in their duties.
“Given the evidence from the crime scene, we can see we are dealing with serious, heavily armed individuals. Our members must stay alert at all times,” Mkhwanazi said.
