Baby found near a filling station in Komani on Sunday, 23 February.
A 20-YEAR-OLD Walter Sisulu University student was arrested on Tuesday, 25 February, in Komani, Eastern Cape.
She was captured on camera dumping her infant on Sunday, 23 February.
The baby was abandoned in a dustbin on Griffith Street and was found dead by a homeless man who was searching the bin for food.
Police initiated an investigation and, with the assistance of CCTV footage, saw the student dumping the baby.

Juan Van Der Walt of the Queenstown Rapid Response Unit said they were at the scene after the baby was dumped in a dustbin on Griffith Street.
“Our team attended the scene and immediately began an investigation to track and trace the person responsible. With the assistance of the community, allowing us access to their cameras, we managed to trace the suspect to her student accommodation,” he said.
He said information gathered was handed over to detectives who arrested the suspect on Tuesday.
Police spokeswoman Captain Yolisa Mgolodela confirmed that a 20-year-old University student appeared in the Komani Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 26 February, on a concealment of birth allegation.
“The prosecutor couldn’t proceed based on available evidence and compassionate grounds and further advised that the suspect be referred to the psychologist,” she said.
