Hungani Ndlovu and Casey Jade van Wyk will star on a play called Musical Chairs.
SKEEM Saam actor Hungani Ndlovu is excited to make his directing debut.
The actor, who plays Tbose on the SABC1 soapie, is working on a theatre play called Musical Chairs, which he is co-directing.
Hungani (30) spoke to Daily Sun about the play that will be showing from 22 January to 1 February at Theatre On The Square in Sandton, north of Jozi.Â
“There are three directors; we’re co-directing. It’s myself, Sipho Didiza, and Aurelie Stratton. It’s been a beautiful journey, and my focus has been on the performance element of the show because it’s a dance-play. The narrative of the play is expressed through dance only, with no dialogue. Because of this, our performances have to be very strong in emoting and capturing the audience’s emotions. It’s been challenging, but I’m thankful for the journey,” he said.
The play was written by Genesis Shirindza.
“The play is about how we, as a society, engage with social media platforms like TikTok, Facebook, X, and Instagram. Some people have healthy relationships with it, while others don’t. People interact with it in various ways, often seeking love or friendship on social media.

“So, it discusses how we interact with social media and how it affects us. And because there’s no dialogue, it’s up to the audience to sit back, open themselves up, and let it determine what it means to them. I often say that some people will be laughing, crying, and introspecting. Everyone will be touched in different ways,” said Hungani.
The actor said people won’t find what they’re expecting in the show.
“The things you see on TikTok—like isibujwa, hip hop, pantsula, and more—are what we’ll be performing. It’s a street dance show that highlights how South Africa is known for its dance culture. People who enjoyed films like You Got Served and Stomp The Yard will appreciate it. It will be a beautiful journey of how dance has evolved. There won’t be the traditional theatre dances like ballet or classical,” he said.
Hungani said he hopes to see more similar theatre concepts in the future.
“What’s important to note is how groundbreaking this type of show is. There isn’t any production like this. Yes, dance is featured in theatre shows, but it usually isn’t the main focus. We trust and believe that this will be the first of many,” the actor said.
