Delft shopkeeper shot in suspected extortion attack, suspects flee the scene.
DELFT residents are reeling in shock after a shopkeeper at a spaza shop was shot through the counter on Wednesday night, 1 January 2025.
It’s alleged three men, pretending to be customers, wanted to buy something just as the shopkeeper was about to close the shop.
Instead of purchasing goods, they shot at him, leaving him seriously injured. He was rushed to hospital where he’s fighting for his life.
Residents and community leaders suspect it might protection fee related.
“The month has just ended, these boys must have been collecting, but the shopkeeper may not have given them what they wanted. If it’s month-end or middle of the month, on the 15th, these kinds of incidents are common,” said a resident who didn’t want to be named.
Delft Community Police Forum (CPF) chairman, Jacky Ockhuizen, confirmed the incident.
He said the shopkeeper thought he was helping customers unaware that his life was in danger.

“Unfortunately, three other male customers waiting for assistance, were up to no good. The tuck shop operator was shot instantly through the counter window. Circumstances behind this shooting incident are still unknown. Delft CPF suspects extortion for protection money,” CPF spokesman said.
Police spokesman Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi confirmed the incident. He said Delft police are investigating an attempted murder case.
“Circumstances surrounding this incident are still under investigation. Reports suggested that unidentified armed men approached a local shop in Marigold Street in Delft South on Wednesday, 01 January 2025, around 10pm.
“They fired a gunshot at the foreign national, who was busy serving customers, causing serious injury. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. The suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested,” said Swartbooi.
