AN e-hailing driver has gone viral on social media after a robbery by a group of boys.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, 24 December, in the Rylands area of Cape Town. It was captured on the driver’s dashboard camera and widely shared on social media.

The driver was called to pick up a client but was ambushed instead. One of the suspects had a knife, threatening to stab the driver.

“Do you want to f**ken die?” one of the boys said. In a state of fear, the driver told them, “Take everything, take everything”.

After the robbery, the thug with a knife asked if the driver was Muslim. Another thug returned, shook the driver’s hand, and said “Salam,” before shouting, “No stress, my guy,” as the group vanished.

The robbery happened at 5:12am on Christmas Eve. Afterward, the traumatised and confused driver drove down the street visibly shaken.

Siyabonga Hlabisa, Western Cape E-hailing Association chairman, expressed concern, saying: “We have become targets. I hope the government takes these incidents seriously and punishes those guilty of crimes against e-hailing drivers.

“We’re hustling for our families, but criminals target us. A driver is killed almost every day. I advise drivers to avoid certain areas during the festive season.”

Police spokesman Captain Frederick Van Wyk said a robbery case has been opened. The victim was ambushed at Hadji Ebrahiem Crescent in Rylands.

“A passenger entered and threatened him with a weapon. Three others took his cellphone, speed point machine, and cash,” said Van Wyk.

No arrests have been made, and the driver wasn’t injured. Police urge anyone with information about the incident to contact Athlone police on 021 697 9238/39.
