NORTH West MEC demands answers after buses torched.
North West MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management, Wessels Morweng, wants answers after nine buses were destroyed in a fire at the North West Transport Investment (NTI) depot in Moretele Village.
The cause of the fire, which happened on Monday morning, 3 February, is still unknown. Morweng said the NTI management has opened a case with the police.
“We recently improved the entity by addressing leadership issues and paying employees’ salaries. This incident is a setback,” said Morweng.

The incident is seen as a setback, and the MEC urged authorities to handle the matter decisively.
To minimize the impact on commuters, NTI’s Acting Group Chief Executive Officer, Dr Ntlhopeng Dikobe, and management have developed contingency plans.
The MEC said the department will continue to support the company to ensure service delivery and prevent commuters from being stranded.
“In the meantime, the department, as a stakeholder in the company, will continue to play a supportive role to ensure service delivery is not compromised and commuters are not left stranded,” said Morweng.
In a separate incident, 50 Putco buses were torched by thugs in Moloto, Wolwekraal, and Siyabuswa in Mpumalanga on Monday night, 27 January 2025.
North West Police spokeswoman Captain Mpho Manyoba said: “A case of damage to essential infrastructure has been registered by Bedwang police. It is alleged that the fire started in one of the buses and spread to eight others, which were completely destroyed. Investigations are underway, and no arrests have been made.”
