The Chuene Clinic has been temporarily closed until Monday, 13 January.

THE Chuene Clinic has been temporarily closed following a distressing incident.

Two nurses, aged 47 and 28, were abducted at gunpoint, assaulted, and raped during their night duty at the clinic in Ga-Chuene village, outside Polokwane, Limpopo, in the early hours of Friday morning, 10 January.

As a result, patients needing medical assistance must now travel to other areas for healthcare services.

According to Department of Health spokesman Neil Shikwambana, the clinic will remain closed throughout the weekend due to these traumatic events involving robbery, abduction, and sexual assault of the nurses.

Shikwambana said they sympathise with their employees and are concerned about the impact on their well-being and that of the community.

“In light of this situation, we encourage villagers to seek medical assistance at the nearest clinics in the neighbouring areas, including Maja, Soetfontein, and Unit B clinics,” he said.

The Chuene Clinic has been temporarily closed until Monday, 13 January.

The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (Denosa) in Limpopo has seriously condemned the incident.

Its provincial secretary, Jacob Molepo, said they held an urgent meeting with the health department where they decided to close the clinic until Monday, 13 January.

“All nurses will be referred for counselling, and night duty will be suspended indefinitely. We call upon villagers to cooperate with police and provide all the necessary information to ensure that the perpetrators are arrested,” he said.

Molepo urged the department to enhance security in health facilities by ensuring that service providers deploy qualified armed security officers and install cameras and other security monitoring devices.
