ABAHLALI from Vosloorus extension in Ekurhuleni are preparing to bid farewell to 2024 in a festive and united manner.

On Tuesday, 31 December, they’ll gather to enjoy a bonfire ceremony, ringing in 2025 with warmth and community spirit.

Tau Mathaba (34) said the community had been celebrating the end of the year with a bonfire for the past eight years.

“We remember our elders celebrating New Year’s Eve with a bonfire, and we’ve maintained this tradition to unite residents. This encourages the youth to join in and help us put aside our differences and welcome the new year together,” said Tau.

Another resident, Tisetso Langa (35), said that they creatively decorate the bonfire with old car tyres and local art to beautify the structure.

“It’s our way of saying goodbye to 2024 and hoping for a better life ahead. We wish for jobs and crime-free townships. At midnight, we ignite the bonfire along with fireworks to welcome the New Year,” said Tisetso.

Sabelo Dlongolo (23) expressed hope for everyone’s future.

“The bonfire is a symbol of gathering and unity. If we hold onto this spirit, we can recreate the days when children played safely in the streets, protected and loved by their community.”
