A MATRICULANT who aced his matric subjects desperately needs financial help.
Andiswa Ngobese (17) from Empangeni, northern KZN achieved a bachelor’s pass in his matric exams, earning five distinctions.
He was doing his matric at Welabasha High School at KwesakaMthethwa, a dusty rural village in Empangeni.
Andiswa received offers from seven universities to pursue a Bachelor of Optometry or medicine. Among these universities are University of Johannesburg (UJ) and University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN.
He said the challenge is that he doesn’t have funds to travel from Empangeni to UJ or UKZN campuses.
Andiswa told Daily Sun that he applied for Nsfas, but the biggest challenge is that they will fund him when it is too late.
“My biggest challenge is that I don’t have any money to start to make any moves. I’m staying with my grandmother, Doris Ngobese, who is a pensioner, and we don’t have money in my family.
“I’d appreciate any financial help to make my dream of studying for a Bachelor of Optometry come true. My biggest concern is that Nsfas will reply and fund me late when my university offers are no longer available,” he said.
Andiswa said his dream is to work as a professional health worker and return to his community to help them with health issues.
“My community is still left behind in terms of the health facilities. It’s embarrassing that we only have one clinic that serves many residents.
“If I can study optometry or medicine, there will be a big difference in my community because I’ll come back to give back to my community. That’s why I’m asking for financial help to go and study,” he said.
