THE Manke family is still traumatised.
This after Surprise (21) gave birth outside the gate of Rosenekal Clinic in Sekhukhune, Limpopo on Saturday, 1 February.
Speaking to Daily Sun, Surprise’s gogo, Irene (61) said the family was devastated.
She said Surprise experienced labour pains on Saturday and was rushed to the clinic in a car they hired. Much to their surprise, the family allegedly found ambulances parked, but there was no driver.
With no medical resources or professional healthcare official to help, gogo Irene said she was left with no option but to help Surprise give birth outside the clinic.
“We are still traumatised. We are just grateful that Surprise and her bouncing baby girl survived the ordeal,” said gogo Irene.
According to the gogo, an off-duty emergency worker who lives close to the clinic told the family they were not “special” when he was called to help.
“After spending hours at the gate with the baby already delivered, one emergency personnel was called to help. When he arrived, he told us we were not special. Eventually, Surprise and her baby girl were taken to Lydenburg Hospital,” she said.

Gogo Irene expressed relief that Surprise, who’s now a mum of two, is doing fine.
“We’re just relieved they’re both alive and well. Although we didn’t receive any psychosocial support after the incident, we comfort ourselves with the fact that the two survived,” she said.
South African Emergency Personnel’s Union president Mpho Mpogeng said the strategy implemented by the Limpopo Department of Health to allocate ambulances to crew members is not working.
“This strategy is not working. Instead, it creates problems for Emergency Medical Services. They buy a fleet of ambulances and park them while our people are left stranded,” said Mpogeng
Health Department spokesman Neil Shikwambane said: “Investigations surrounding this incident are currently underway. We can confirm that both the mum and child received medical attention and were discharged.”
