A MUM is struggling to come to terms with her son’s death.
Sello Rosemary Thepa (33) from Botlokwa Sekonye Village in Limpopo lost her son when he was shot allegedly by his friends on 29 July 2023.
Ten-year-old Matome Orbet Thepa’s life was tragically cut short when his friends allegedly shot him while playing.
The incident took place at the house of Matome’s friend in the same village.
Sello, a mum of four, claimed the justice system has failed her son.
“Our government is not fair; our justice system failed my son. How am I supposed to feel when I see my kid’s killers roaming the streets while he’s buried? said the mum.
“I don’t care if they are still young; they must go to jail. That’s the only way I will find healing and closure. What’s more hurtful is that the gun used belonged to someone who passed on. Why did the family not return the gun to the police to avoid incidents like this?”

The mother said Matome’s death took a toll on his siblings’ well-being.
“My firstborn, Lesedi Thepa (16), was affected severely as he was the one who saw the body of his younger brother lying in a pool of blood that day. I’m saying this because after the funeral, he visited Matome’s graveside every day. He has now failed to progress to the next grade at school. Matome’s death took a toll on his siblings’ well-being,” she said.
Speaking to Daily Sun, legal expert Madihlabe Makgobatlou of Madihlabe Makgobatlou Attorneys Inc, said: “The kids, at this point, don’t have what we call the legal capacity to stand trial; they are underage. They appeared in court under their parents’ supervision and are out on bail. When they turn 18 years old, the trial will resume, and if the court finds them guilty, they will be sentenced.”
