Gayton McKenzie pays tribute to Michelle Botes, honouring her legacy and impact on South African television.
MINISTER of Sport, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie sends condolences to former Isidingo actress’s family.
The 63-year-old was known for her iconic role as Cherel de Villiers on the SABC3 soapie.
In a media statement, he said: “It is with deep sorrow that I, on behalf of the Ministry, join the nation in mourning the passing of Michelle Botes, a multiple award-winning South African actor, who left us on Saturday morning after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 62.
“Michelle Botes was more than an actor. She was a national treasure, whose talent, charisma, and authenticity brought life to every role she played. From her iconic portrayal of Cherel de Villiers in Isidingo to her captivating presence in Binnelanders, Michelle’s artistry touched the hearts of millions and elevated South African television,” he said.

“Her work in Arende from 1994 and Legacy from 2020 will be remembered. She inspired many young performers to dream big and persevere in their craft, always having time for others.
“Her diagnosis of advanced multiple myeloma in 2022 brought her bravery into the spotlight, reminding us of the fragility and strength of the human spirit. Despite health challenges, Michelle continued to inspire with grace and courage, becoming a symbol of hope for many South Africans.
“Her passing is a profound loss for our country. As we mourn her departure, we must celebrate her legacy. Michelle Botes’ contribution will continue to resonate, reminding us of storytelling’s power to unite, heal, and transform.”
McKenzie honours Michelle on behalf of the Ministry.
“I extend heartfelt condolences to Michelle’s family, friends, and the South African creative industry. May they find comfort in knowing she was loved and cherished by her nation. Let us honour Michelle by continuing to support the arts in South Africa, ensuring her legacy lives on.”
