ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula has revealed that some individuals want him to become the ANC deputy president.
ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula claims he’s been approached to stand as party deputy in 2027.
He made this startling revelation at a media briefing at Luthuli House in Joburg on Monday, 20 January.
Mbalula said people told him he must “jump” to a higher position.
“I know about that. It’s the truth. People have come to me, but I’m not power drunk to think I can use this position of secretary-general to advance my interests. I cannot do that. I stick with the principle that we don’t discuss succession now. We will talk about it at the right time.”
He said he intends to express his thoughts at the right time, as he is clear about his desires.
The ANC will go to a conference to elect party leaders in 2027.

Mbalula said he’ll never undermine the cohesion of the ANC.
“I have said to comrades, individually and so on, that the ANC has said these matters will be ventilated at the right time and will discuss them properly,” said Mbalula.
He warned that electing leaders solely based on popularity, without considering their qualities, has affected the party.
“Comrades must wait up until the organisation opens this matter and is to be discussed.”
He pointed out that the ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting at the weekend to discuss organisational matters, including the leadership of KZN and Gauteng, was hijacked by factionalists.
“It was unfortunate that a very important discussion of the fate of these provinces was hijacked by factionalists for factional reasons about the future of the party, in terms of what would happen after (ANC president Cyril) Ramaphosa. It did happen, and the NEC expressed itself on this matter and said it must stop.
“You don’t leak. We are now speaking as the ANC and telling you that this discussion was polarised by such interests, and we have reflected on it. We frown upon it,” said Mbalula.
He admitted that factionalism within the ANC is hard to die. “Functionalism tendency is a detriment to the survival of the organisation that must survive for decades to come.”
