Petrus Mkhondo was stabbed to death.
THE relationship between the tenants was toxic, and this toxicity led to loss of life.
A tenant allegedly stabbed another to death after a fight involving kids.
Tenant Petrus Mkhondo (57) was fatally stabbed inside his shack on Wednesday, 18 December, just a day after he obtained a protection order against his associate, whom he told the landlord and others was harassing him.
On 17 December, Petrus sought a protection order stating that a fight between their kids escalated, resulting in insults from the tenant.
The protection order, seen by Daily Sun, detailed Petrus’ claim that the other tenant vowed to ambush him.
Their landlord, Lidile Makola from zone 7 at Winnie Mandela in Thembisa, Ekurhuleni said that the two tenants had ongoing disagreements for a while.
“He applied for the protection order, and he said it was to prevent his fellow tenant from coming close to him. This didn’t sit well with the other tenant,” she said.
On Wednesday, 18 December, the barred tenant confronted Petrus, demanding an explanation for the protection order.
An argument broke out, and the other tenant (44), now a suspect, allegedly stabbed Petrus with a knife, resulting in his death on the spot. The suspect is currently on the run.
“They would fight about anything. But I never thought it would end in death. Petrus used to say he feared being killed by another tenant, but we took it lightly,” she said.

Ekurhuleni district police spokeswoman Captain Nelda Sekgobela said that cops learnt about the incident after the alleged killer’s girlfriend reported it.
“The sector vehicle quickly rushed to the scene, where the woman pointed to two backyard shacks attached. Inside one shack, a man was found lying in a pool of blood, lifeless,” she said.
The woman informed the police of a long-standing misunderstanding between her boyfriend and the dead man, leading to Petrus seeking a protection order against her boyfriend.
Sekgobela said that by the time police arrived, the suspect had fled.
Oupa Mkhondo, the dead man’s younger brother, said: “All we want is for the suspect to hand himself over to the police. My brother was not a violent man. He just found himself in a toxic situation. I wish he had left for peace of mind, but now it’s too late.”
