Snl24 | Loatinover Pounds and the rise of Punyete Sontaga

2 min

The third and final Punyete Sontaga event of the year takes place on Sunday, December 15, 2024 at Mzansi Resorts.

Loatinover Pounds, known for his hit Sosh Plata and latest album Pray 4 Pitori, and
his team are transforming the creative landscape of Pretoria North through Punyete
Sontaga, a hip hop and arts-focused event that’s quickly becoming a cultural
cornerstone. Spearheaded by talent representative Khumo Lesufi, this unique
initiative is creating a space for young creatives to connect, celebrate, and
grow.

The inspiration behind Punyete Sontaga stems from a need to foster community
and creativity in the Pretoria North suburbs of Mabopane, Soshanguve, and
Garankuwa. “There was no platform for young creatives to meet, network, and
have a good time,” says Khumo. “We wanted to create a space where people
working in the industry are accessible, while also celebrating the culture that
makes this area unique.”

Unlike the more mainstream amapiano and Bacardi events typical of the area, Punyete
Sontaga caters to hip hop enthusiasts, fashion lovers, and even introverts who
prefer daytime gatherings over late-night outings. “This event revolves around
creative and hip hop culture,” Khumo explains. “It’s for people who appreciate
art, fashion, and music while feeling included in a space that understands
them.”

The making of Punyete Sontaga
The third and final Punyete Sontaga event of the year takes place on Sunday,
December 15, 2024. The journey to this milestone has been a labour of love,
starting in the winter and marked by challenges such as the postponement of its
launch due to Loatinover Pounds’ album release, Pray 4 Pitori.

“We’ve been doing this ourselves without major sponsors.
It’s been a learning curve, but every setback has taught us something new,”
says Khumo.

This event is by Pretoria North youth for Pretoria North youth,” Khumo emphasises.
“We’re not hosting it in the city because we want to bring opportunities back
home. There’s a quote I love: ‘When you make it, don’t build higher walls,
build a longer table.’ That’s exactly what we’re trying to do.”

The event is a celebration of community spirit, with
numerous contributors coming together selflessly to make it happen. “For me,
that’s the epitome of community,” Lesufi says. “It’s brought people together
this festive season and kept them off the streets.”

As Punyete Sontaga closes out the year, the team has big plans for its future.
“We’re hoping to secure sponsorships and make it a regular event, hosting it
around three to four times a year, starting with Easter,” Lesufi reveals.

“We want people to realise that community matters,
culture matters, and your roots matter,” Lesufi says. “This dream is not for
one person—it’s a collective dream. People’s dreams are valid, and this event
is proof that even in places where it feels impossible, dreams can come true.”
