RAPPER Duncan stole the hearts of maskandi fans by dressing like amabhinca.
The 29-year-old rapper from Durban was invited to perform at the Mthandeni Summer Experience held in eMdletsheni, northern KZN on Saturday, 4 January.
Duncan, who typically wears skinny jeans, surprised maskandi fans, also known as amabhinca, by wearing like a maskandi musician.
He donned a Brentwood trouser, known as ugodo, and Omega sandals, both commonly associated with maskandi musicians and their fans.
Following his performance, amabhinca fans took to social media to express their excitement over Duncan’s gesture. Some have even given him a new maskandi name, calling him iDuncan Elisha, meaning the new Duncan, while others are urging him to collaborate with maskandi singers.Â

Duncan, whose real name is Siphamandla Mbambo, told Daily Sun that he’s humbled and delighted by how maskandi fans embraced him at their festival, organised by top maskandi artist Mthandeni Manqele.
“It was my first time performing at a maskandi festival, and I was excited to learn more about amabhinca, as the event was held in rural areas where they typically reside. Although we were invited as musicians from different genres, the majority were maskandi musicians, and I wanted to blend in with them.
“Having never worn a Brentwood trouser before, I sought assistance from one of the amabhinca, who guided me on how to wear it properly, warning that not doing so would be an insult and a misrepresentation of their lifestyle. I was informed that it should not be washed with water but rather dry-cleaned,” he said.

He said he was overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of maskandi fans upon seeing him in their attire.
“I learned that their style of dressing is their way of life; they are friendly and show respect if you respect them. I was amazed that they knew my songs and sang along.
“As outsiders, we might perceive them as violent due to their attire and behavior, as some often carry weapons, but I discovered they are not violent. Instead, this is their signature lifestyle,” he said.
