IFP president and Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Miister Velenkosini Hlabisa’s official vehicle was involved in a deadly accident.
The IFP’s national spokesman, Mkhuleko Hlengwa, confirmed that the incident happened on the N2, heading north near Stanger in KZN, at about 4.30pm on Saturday, 11 January.
“On Saturday, 11 January 2025, around 16:30, an IFP vehicle used by the IFP President was in a serious accident on the N2 going north near Stanger. Sadly, the driver, who was alone in the car, died at the scene. The IFP President went to the driver’s family this evening to offer his condolences and to tell them the sad news. To respect the family’s privacy while they inform other relatives, the driver’s name will not be shared right now. We don’t yet know what caused the accident, and investigations are ongoing. The IFP sends its heartfelt sympathies to the grieving family, the IFP President, and his security team during this tough time,” Hlengwa said in a statement.

The driver, who was alone, died at the scene. On Saturday evening, the IFP President personally visited the driver’s family to share his condolences and the sad news.

The reasons for the accident are still unclear, and an investigation is underway. Following some media reports linking minister Hlabisa to the accident, the Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Ministry (CoGTA) assured everyone that minister Hlabisa is safe at home with his family.
“Minister Hlabisa sends his deepest sympathies to the grieving family during this difficult time,” said Pearl Maseko-Binqose, media liaison officer for the CoGTA minister.
She also asked for the family’s privacy to be respected so they can mourn in peace.
