Uwineza says she poured her heart on her album.
RISING musician Uwineza has finally released her debut album.
The project, titled You’re Gonna Hate It, sees the songstress laying bare her heart and soul.
Uwineza, whose real name is Zoya Uwineza Mothupi-Sarges (21), began writing music during the Covid-19 pandemic to keep herself sane. Now, she’s carved out a career from her passion.
She began with the piano and guitar before falling in love with the saxophone, which she played in a jazz band for six years. During the lockdown in 2022, she started writing songs daily on their untuned living room piano.
“My dad’s love for music inspired me to find my own voice. It kept me sane,” she said.
Her project reflects her journey through heartbreak and healing, inspired by the seven stages of grief.
“In 2023, after my first heartbreak, I joked with Niko, the album’s producer, about making an album. By 2024, that joke became a reality.

“Each song tells its own story, moving from disappointment and regret to anger and eventual acceptance. The album concludes with Crush, a track about rediscovering love and moving forward. I see it as a breakthrough album rather than a breakup one,” she said.
One of the songs, Gold Hoops, holds special significance for Uwineza.
“It’s about landing back on your feet when life knocks you down. The lyrics broken promises, black boots, gold hoops represent a moment of simple yet profound truth.”
Currently based in Berlin, Uwineza remains deeply connected to her Mzansi roots.
“I’m half South African, and Joburg will always be home. The South African alternative rock scene has so much potential, and I’d love to be part of its growth. Love and loss are universal themes, and music is a powerful way to explore these emotions,” she said.
Her plans for 2025 include releasing two EPs and singles.
