ESKOM suspends loadshedding after temporary setback.
Eskom has announced the suspension of loadshedding after implementing Stage 3 over the weekend. The power utility confirmed that loadshedding was lifted at 6:00 AM on Sunday, 2 February, due to the replenishment of emergency reserves.
“Due to the sufficient replenishment of emergency reserves, loadshedding was suspended today at 6:00 in the morning,” said Eskom spokeswoman Daphne Mokwena. She added that updates will be provided if any significant changes occur.

The brief return of loadshedding came after a 10-month break, during which Eskom reported significant improvements in its generation capacity.
On Friday, Eskom Group Chief Executive Dan Morakane reassured the public that the current loadshedding was a temporary issue.
“Over the past seven days, we have experienced several breakdowns that require extended repair times. This has necessitated the use of all our emergency reserves, which now need to be replenished over the weekend,” he said.
Despite the setbacks, Morakane affirmed that loadshedding is a thing of the past due to structural upgrades to the generation fleet. Eskom’s Group Executive for Generation, Bheki Nxumalo, echoed Morakane’s sentiment, emphasizing that the improvements to coal-fired generation plants remain intact.
“The structural improvements and efficiency gained in our coal-fired generation fleet are safe. The R16.30 billion saved in diesel spend from 1 April 2024 to 30 January 2025 is also secure,” said Nxumalo. He noted that the weekend’s loadshedding was necessary to replenish reserves such as Open-Cycle Gas Turbines and pumped storage systems.
“We are committed to ensuring that South Africa is in no way returning to the levels of loadshedding we experienced in 2023,” he said.
