How to keep yourself and assets safe during the festive period.
HOLIDAY thefts are a major concern in South Africa.
According to Stats SA’s report on housebreakings for the 2022/23 period, about 1,1 million households experienced housebreaking incidents during the festive season.
This represents about 5,7% of all households in the country.
Here are some tips from police and private security firms to help you stay safe:
Be cautious with Social Media
Oversharing: Don’t post real-time updates about your holiday plans or purchases. This can alert potential thieves that your home is unattended.
Privacy Settings: Ensure your social media accounts are private, so only trusted friends and family can see your posts.
Delay Posts: Share holiday photos and updates after you return home.

Secure Your Home
Install Security Systems: Invest in a good security system with cameras and alarms to deter burglars and provide evidence if a break-in occurs.
Use Timers for Lights: Set timers for your lights to give the impression that someone is home.
Ask a Neighbour for Help: Have a trusted neighbour watch your property and collect your mail to avoid signs of an empty house.
Protect Your Valuables
Keep Valuables Out of Sight: Don’t leave expensive items visible through windows. Store them in a safe place.
Use a Safe: Invest in a home safe for important documents and valuables.
Insurance: Ensure your valuables are insured for peace of mind and financial protection.
Be Mindful of Your Surroundings
Stay Alert: Be aware of your surroundings, especially when shopping or withdrawing cash.
Avoid Flashy Displays: Don’t flaunt your purchases or cash in public places.
By taking these precautions, police and private security companies said you can enjoy the festive season with peace of mind, knowing you and your valuable assets are safe.
