LEGENDARY kwaito musician Doc Shebeleza, born Victor Bogopane, has died at age 51.

The renowned businessman and kwaito veteran had been battling health issues for several years.

On 2 December 2024, Doc Shebeleza shared with the public that he had undergone successful surgery, with plans for a second operation scheduled for 2 February 2025.

Sadly, his family confirmed the heartbreaking news of his death to Daily Sun on Thursday morning, 9 January.

His daughter, Segaetsho, confirmed the news.

“Yes, I can confirm that he passed away this morning,” she said.

Segaetsho also mentioned that the family would release an official press statement.

In an emotional interview with Daily Sun in December 2024, Doc Shebeleza spoke candidly about the financial strain he had been under due to his health struggles.

He revealed that he was spending more than R20 000 on medication alone and that his second surgery would cost a staggering R350 000.

“I’ve paid some of the money, but now I’m short. I don’t have enough. It’s very difficult. Private hospitals are extremely expensive,” he said at the time.

Doc Shebeleza’s passing comes just days after the news of the death of singer and dancer Winnie Khumalo, who died following a short illness.

Doc Shebeleza, a prominent figure in the kwaito music scene, first gained recognition in 1995 with his debut album, Shebeleza, which included the hit song Ghets Ghetsa.

He followed this with the S’kumfete album, which included the popular title track.

Over the years, Doc Shebeleza released three more albums: Tiger (1997), Ebumnandini (2000), and Jiva Yoyo (2001).

His music continues to be celebrated by kwaito fans and remains a staple of South African musical history.

Sangoma Solly Mathebula, also known as Gogo Mahlasela from Mamelodi in Tshwane, spoke to Daily Sun in December 2024, predicting that the year 2025 would start on a bad note.

“I see one male kwaito legend dying and he will be the opening of 2025. More celebrities are going to pass. The reason is that these people use ukuthwala, and they don’t follow proper instructions, and they end up taking them instead,” he said.
