Cops and City of Cape Town officials raid an unlicenced sausage maker ekasi in Mfuleni.

THE CITY of Cape Town and the police pounced on an unlicenced sausage manufacturing facility in Mfuleni on Wednesday, 13 November.

It was chaos as the locals bumped into each other to watch the police raid the place.

City of Cape Town Safety and Security MMC Jean-Pierre Smith said they received intelligence about illegal food manufacturing at the site.

During the raid, officials discovered that the facility was processing and packaging sausages in an unhygienic manner.

Smith said this posed a health risk to consumers.

“After receiving a tip, the authorities launched a joint operation involving SAPS Crime Intelligence, city officials, and city health staff, along with investigators from the city’s strategic information management service. Upon inspecting the premises on 13 November 2024, they discovered sausage being processed and packaged in unsanitary conditions,” said Smith.

Investigations at the scene suggest that the owner and four employees are suspected of being in the country illegally.

The premises have been declared a crime scene, and forensic experts were collecting contents and confiscating food samples found inside the house for further testing.

Smith said they arrested and detained everyone who was inside the house at the time of the raid.

“This operation highlights the importance of food safety and the need for strict regulations to prevent unlicenced and unsanitary food manufacturing operations. The City of Cape Town and SAPS have shown commitment to addressing crime and ensuring public safety in the Western Cape province,” Smith said.

Residents from Mfuleni said they were shocked to see several police and law enforcement vans in their neighbourhood.

They didn’t know the people were manufacturing sausages.

“We always see them entering that place but never knew what they were busy with inside. We see vehicles entering and leaving the premises,” said a resident who spoke to the SunTeam.
