“COMEDY allows me to express myself.”
Those were the words of the comedian and medical professional, Dr Suhayl Essa.
The funnyman from Durban, KZN, shared how stand-up comedy has become an outlet for him to grow, express himself, and deal with the challenges of working in a hospital setup.
The 31-year-old medical doctor emphasised that one can still pursue their passions and have a professional career.
In an interview with Daily Sun, Dr Essa described comedy as therapeutic for his life and called it a “perfect outlet” to release his stress.
“Comedy allows me to express myself and talk about the difficult things I deal with at the hospital, but in a light-hearted way,” he said.
Dr Essa also shed light on how comedy is one of the underappreciated arts in Mzansi.

He argued that comedians needed more recognition since comedy gives immediate feedback compared to other creative disciplines.
“As comedians, we’re the most underappreciated art form in South Africa. Comedy gives you an immediate response. If you paint a picture, it sits on a wall for a year before someone might say, ‘Wow, well done’. But at a comedy show, the moment you deliver a punchline, you know right away if it landed or not. That’s the magic of live performance,” he said.
Dr Essa expressed optimism about the growth of stand-up comedy in the country, predicting a bright future for the art form.
“In the next few years, we’re going to see the rise of many great stand-ups,” he said.
When asked how he balances his demanding career as a medical professional with his passion for comedy, Dr Essa credited dedication and sacrifice.
“Where there’s a will, there’s a way. I worked 30-hour shifts and still made it to the comedy club at night. I sacrificed time with friends and family because I knew this was what I needed to do to fulfil my purpose. If you have that feeling inside, go for it. Pursue your dreams, even if it means making sacrifices.”
