CHRIS Hani’s Killer is a free man.

The parole of convicted murderer Janusz Walus has ended. This was revealed by Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, during a media briefing in Tshwane on Friday, 6 December.

Ntshavheni was joined by representatives from the Departments of Justice, Home Affairs, and Correctional Services to update on Walus’ parole status.

On 10 April 1993, Walus assassinated anti-apartheid activist Chris Hani, who was the general secretary of the South African Communist Party (SACP), chief-of-staff of Umkhonto weSizwe, and a member of the ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC).

Walus was sentenced to death on 15 October 1993, but his sentence was commuted to life imprisonment on 7 November 2000.

Walus held dual citizenship until 2017, when his South African citizenship was revoked. He now only holds Polish citizenship.

Several ministers denied his parole applications since 2011. However, on 21 November 2022, the Constitutional Court ordered that Walus be placed on parole. Ntshavheni stated that the applicable parole period was two years.
