GOGO Theresa Khoza (56) is living with a disability and bedridden.
For gogo, who lives in a shack with a leaky roof and holes almost everywhere in Etwatwa, Ekurhuleni, the recent rains have become a dreadful nightmare.
Her bed is soaked, and to make matters worse, the shack has been flooded.
On Wednesday, residents of Ext 17 in Etwatwa volunteered to drain the water from her inundated shack, which was knee-deep in water.
“I could touch the water under my bed. I’m worried if it keeps raining like this, it might swallow my bed while I’m asleep. I’m cold,” said gogo Theresa.
She has been enduring these conditions since 2018, as her area is flood prone.

“I can’t walk, and it rains on me because my shack has holes,” she said.

Resident Minenhle Sibiya said that the local councillor was informed about their plight, but he allegedly refused to engage, claiming their area doesn’t officially exist.

“We don’t understand how because we have electricity. How can Eskom electrify a non-existent area? But when they want our votes, we do exist,” said another resident, Wilhemina Ndobe.
Zweli Dlamini, spokesman for Ekurhuleni Municipality, said he’ll escalate the issue to the mayor’s office.
