RESIDENTS from the southern and mountainous area of Cape Town are living in fear.
They’ve been struggling with baboons invading their homes.
Residents from the area said for the past four years, they’ve been tormented by baboons entering their homes and going through their bins for food.
“We didn’t have this problem until around 2020. Before that, the baboon management strategy we had worked well,” said a resident from Da Gama Park.
She said sometimes when she goes to work in the morning, baboons enter her home and sometimes break windows to get food from the house.
A joint task team, including the City of Cape Town, SANParks, and Cape Nature, has come up with a solution to address the baboon issue, but it lasted only for one month.

Residents are worried that the number of rangers deployed will also be less than the previous numbers, as the municipality allegedly doesn’t have money. The community is concerned about what will happen in January 2025.
“The City of Cape Town has appointed NCC through a Request for Quotation process to ensure the presence of baboon rangers from 1 December until 31 December 2024 to keep troops out of the urban area and in their natural environment as far as possible.
“Due to limited funding, the number of rangers monitoring the troops during this time will be less than before. As such, residents and businesses are kindly advised to please practise responsible waste management at all times and be vigilant,” a joint statement from the City of Cape Town, SANParks, and Cape Nature said.
In August 2024, baboons raided Kommetjie Eco Pre-Primary School for three days, stealing kids’ lunchboxes.
Residents want the relevant government institutions to come up with a long-term plan to address the issue of baboons.
