THE African National Congress (ANC) has welcomed Mozambique’s election results as officially declared by the Constitutional Council.

In a statement on Tuesday, 24 December, the ANC, a longstanding ally of Mozambique, reaffirmed its respect for constitutional processes and institutions that safeguard regional democracy.

“We call on all political parties, stakeholders, and citizens in Mozambique to respect the declared outcomes and prioritise unity and national development. This is a crucial moment to rise above divisions and work collectively to address the socio-economic challenges facing the nation,” said ANC spokeswoman Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri.

ANC spokeswoman Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri says the party welcomes the declaration of Mozambique elections.

She highlighted the importance of dialogue, mutual respect, and commitment to the people’s will for ensuring political stability and sustainable development.

The election results were announced by the judges on Monday, 23 December, following unrest since the elections on 9 October.

Daniel Chapo from the ruling Frelimo party, which has been in power since independence from Portugal in 1975, was declared the winner with 65,2% of the votes.

Bhengu-Motsiri noted that renewing unity among Mozambicans and fortifying historic ties between Frelimo and the ANC are mutually beneficial. These efforts aim to enhance people-to-people relationships and foster inclusive economic growth for both nations.

“South Africa and Mozambique share a deep history rooted in the struggle for liberation and the pursuit of peace and prosperity for all. The ANC remains committed to deepening these ties and working closely with Mozambique’s elected leadership to promote regional integration, economic development, and peace across our continent,” said Bhengu-Motsiri.

She emphasised the ANC’s belief that strong democratic institutions and cooperation among all societal sectors are key to achieving lasting peace, prosperity, and improved living standards for the people of Mozambique.
