Despite his humble beginnings in the suburbs of Brits, insurance tycoon and property-estate developer, Douw Steyn, lived a life of luxury in a palace fit for a king, which he aptly named “Palazzo Steyn”.

The Steyn City founder died on Tuesday, 4 February, at the age of 72 years old. According to reports, this followed a long illness.

According to the Sunday Times, Douw had a net worth in excess of R70 billion.

DOUW STEYN: INSIDE HIS PALATIAL HOME

Douw Steyn’s home – Palazzo Steyn – is located in Fourways and was featured in a segment of the luxury magazine TV show Top Billing in 2018. It was home to the billionaire businessman and his wife, Carolyn.

The sprawling mansion was built overlooking Steyn City, an upmarket private residential and lifestyle estate founded by the property developer in 2015.

The 3000 square metre home  – built on an aqueduct – was inspired by Italian architecture, hence its nickname.

It boasts seven bedrooms, an indoor pool and outdoor infinity pool, a spa, gym, and two-storey library!

According to Top Billing, Douw Steyn told architects that his home and his city be the “best of the best” in terms of design and technology.

The interior featured a marble staircase, copper dome, large windows and doors, and multiple intricate chandeliers imported from London. Douw’s garage – which houses dozens of luxury cars – is also made of marble.

IMPRESSIVE CAR COLLECTION TOO!

Douw Steyn not only lived in opulence, he drove it, too! The wealthy South African had a collection of luxury sports and vintage cars.

His most noteworthy one was a  one-of-a-kind Rolls Royce Phantom, custom-designed by Italian manufacturer Pininfarina and nicknamed the “Douwmobile.”

DID DOUW STEYN OWN THE MOST LUXURIOUS HOUSE IN SA?
