Discussion | Should NGOs focus on food poisoning crisis or illegal miners?

1 min

JOHANNESBURG – South Africa is grappling with two major crises. A food poisoning outbreak that’s claimed 20 lives and left hundreds of children sick.

At the same time the removal of illegal miners from an abandoned mine shaft in Stilfontein.

While their plight has drawn significant media attention and resources, it raises an important question:

Which issue is more pressing, and how should our focus and resources be distributed? Adding to this complexity is the role of NGOs.
