90% of spaza shops remain unregistered in Buffalo City Metro

EAST LONDON – Buffalo City Metro has approved the registration of just 10 percent of spaza shop businesses in the area.

It’s concerning the municipality as several foodborne cases have been reported on the Metro in recent months.

Authorities say they’ve also picked up a new trend where foreign nationals are dropping their spaza shop businesses and turning to taverns due to less regulation.  

The municipality has vowed strict enforcement against businesses that prioritise profit over public safety.
