UKHOZI FM presenter Siyabonga “Siya” Mhlongo will finally have his assault trial in court.
This comes after several postponements due to the unfinalised pre-trial conference.
The Durban Magistrates Court has set Friday, 25 April, for his trial.
On Monday, 10 March, Siya appeared briefly in the Durban Magistrates Court with his attorney Sikhumbuzo Mathabela.
State prosecutor Shenaaz Hoosen indicated that the pre-trial conference has been finalised, and the state is ready for the trial.
Magistrate Mhlonipheni Sibiya confirmed that 25 April will be the day for the presenter’s trial.
The trial was initially set for 12 February but postponed to 5 March because the pre-trial conference was not finalised. On 5 March, the trial was postponed again because it was still not complete.
Siya (41) from Durban, who is also a former Metro FM presenter, is accused of assaulting and stabbing his alleged boyfriend.

Siya, who presented the night show Ubusuku Obuhle on Ukhozi FM, was arrested and released on warning in September 2024.
This occurred after a 29-year-old man, who claims to be his boyfriend, opened a case for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The man was allegedly assaulted and stabbed by Siya on the night of 31 August 2024.
After the incident in Durban, Siya trended on social media when the victim posted a video showing blood on his face while Siya asked him to get back in the car to be driven to the nearest hospital.
Siya first appeared in the Durban Magistrates Court on 6 September 2024, and his case was postponed to 27 November 2024. After that, it was postponed to 8 January and later set for trial on 12 February.
With this legal issue hanging over him and court attendances ongoing, Siya’s future on radio seems unclear.
Many stations, including SABC radio, are negotiating new contracts for the season starting on 1 April 2025. Since the assault scandal in September 2024, Ukhozi FM muted Siya despite his existing contract, and it is uncertain if it will be renewed at the end of March.
Siya made history in 2023 by working for both Ukhozi FM and Metro FM the same year.
