PRESIDENT Cyril Ramaphosa is set to deliver his first State of the Nation Address (Sona) under the Government of National Unity (GNU) on Thursday, 6 February.

The address, which will be held at Cape Town City Hall, comes amid divisions within the cabinet and ongoing conflicts at the national level involving other countries.

Daily Sun took to the streets of Cape Town to gather residents’ expectations for the 2025 Sona.

As in previous years, job creation topped the list, alongside calls for innovative technology to tackle climate change, improvements in transport and education, and stricter measures to handle the influx of illegal immigrants.

Enrico Cupido, from the Cape Flats, expressed his frustrations as a young person who has been unemployed for years while watching foreigners being hired.

He urged the president to implement stricter labour laws that prioritise young South Africans.

“This is something we should fight for and make sure the president knows how desperate we are as unemployed young people,” said Enrico.

Mahadio Mohapi highlighted the need to legalise illegal mining to ensure communities benefit from the country’s mineral wealth.

“As the poor community and business, we need Ramaphosa to make the mines legal. When the mines are working, more jobs are created, and even us businesspeople benefit through the food we sell to the miners,” Mahadio said.

Lilithat Xaluva from Gugulethu calls for transformed public transportation.

“We need the president to announce a budget to fix the trains because we are relying on them to get to school,” he said.

Residents are eager to hear how the president plans to address these critical issues, as they look to the Sona for solutions to South Africa’s most pressing challenges.
