MAHLANGU couple awaits sentencing after murder conviction.

Judge Papi Masopa has postponed the sentencing of Sibusiso Mahlangu and his wife, Lerato, to Tuesday, 28 January 2025.

On Monday, 27 January, Sibusiso (34) cited illness in the North Gauteng High Court, causing a delay in proceedings.

The couple, from Soshanguve in Tshwane, faces charges including premeditated murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and three counts of fraud.

The couple is accused of murdering Sibusiso Sitebe on 2 January 2022. Lerato, who had a romantic relationship with Sitebe and shares a child with him, lured him to their home where he was killed.

The couple staged the scene, dressing Sitebe in Sibusiso’s clothes, placing his ring on Sitebe’s finger, and burning the body to conceal the crime.

Lerato then falsely identified the body as her husband’s, misleading the Sitebe family.

Additionally, Lerato submitted three fraudulent insurance claims totalling R575,000, followed by Sibusiso’s arrest on 18 April 2023 for possessing a stolen car in Hammanskraal.

During processing, authorities found him officially registered as deceased, leading to Lerato’s arrest two days later.

Xolani Sitebe, the dead man’s brother, said: “We are still going through a lot. We expected sentencing today, but we will hear tomorrow. We want a life sentence from the court.”

The state is represented by Advocate Vusimuzi Tshabalala.
