HIS new work is inspired by one of Mzansi’s hit songs.
Multi-award-winning director and producer Tebogo “Tebza” Malope is set to make waves with his first independent film, Spirit: The Movie.
Tebza, renowned for his groundbreaking work in film, TV, documentaries, and music videos, draws inspiration from Kwesta and Wale’s hit track Spirit, whose music video he directed seven years ago.
He’s now taking it to the next level by transforming the cultural phenomenon into a full-fledged cinematic experience.
The star-studded cast features industry heavyweights such as award-winning veteran Jerry Mofokeng, celebrated actress Motshabi Tyelele, former The Queen star Rami Chuene, and comedic genius Kagiso Lediga.
Speaking to Daily Sun, Tebza (40) revealed that the film’s concept was born from his unforgettable experience while shooting the original music video.

“More than seven years ago, I directed the music video for Spirit and met incredible characters on set. Since then, those characters have been stuck in my mind, and I’ve always wanted to turn them into a movie,” he said.
Spirit: The Movie offers a fictionalised take on the individuals Tebza encountered during the shoot, creating a deeply personal and authentic portrayal of South African life.

“Audiences can expect an extended version of the music video, but more than that, they’ll get a raw, unfiltered perspective of what it means to be South African from a specific background. The film delivers a visceral, emotional experience that will confront and move viewers,” Tebza added.
Comedy powerhouse Kagiso expressed his excitement about being part of the project.
“I’m thrilled that Tebza is finally bringing this vision to life. The world is about to witness his brilliance, and I’m honoured to be part of it, even in a minor role,” said Kagiso.
Seasoned actress Motshabi also shared her enthusiasm for the film.
“I’m beyond excited and grateful for the opportunity. When Tebogo spoke to me about the project, it really resonated with my spirit. This journey has been a memorable one, reminding me why we do what we do,” she said.
