Sol Phenduka says preparing a kid for school is essentially preparing them for life.

BALANCING a busy career with fatherhood is a challenge.

However, Mzansi stars Sol Phenduka and TT Mbha tackle both effortlessly.

Their efforts set an inspiring example.

Sol: Balancing career and fatherhoodThey spoke to Daily Sun about how they balance work and parenting and how they prepared their kids for the new school year in January 2025.

Sol Phenduka, a DJ, podcaster, and radio host, said being a public figure can make fatherhood challenging.

He admits spending quality time with his daughter is sometimes difficult.

“I’ve had to set boundaries to protect our time together,” he said.

Setting boundaries and prioritising timeHe ensures his daughter lives a life away from the spotlight.

Despite his busy schedule, Sol makes time for her, whether it’s picking her up from school, visiting her on weekends, or just being there.

When preparing his daughter for grade 1, Sol focused on choosing the right environment early on.

“To prepare a child for school is to prepare them for life,” he said.

Preparing for school and co-parenting challengesHe explained how enrolling her in the same school for grade R helped her settle in more easily.

“Her mum did most of the preparation, but I made sure fees and uniforms were sorted. It’s about making sure she succeeds,” he said.

Sol also spoke about the challenges of co-parenting, saying being present is more important than financial support.

“My daughter teaches me every day the value of spending time together. Money doesn’t mean as much to her as a full day with me.”

Sol started his radio career as an intern at YFM (now known as Y), and later joined 5FM’s breakfast show with DJ Fresh.

In 2014, he became widely known as a contestant in Big Brother Mzansi.

He also co-hosts the popular Podcast and Chill with MacG.

Sol received a platinum plaque for his hit song Diqabang, featuring J Khathapillar, Smash SA, and Kamoh Xaba.

TT Mbha: Integrating fatherhood into daily lifeTT Mbha, an entrepreneur and media personality, views fatherhood as a key part of his life.

“My children are my life. I don’t need to schedule time with them. They’re part of me,” he said.

Dropping his kids off at school is a daily chance for bonding, with time for conversations in the car.

TT Mbha says dropping his kids off at school provides a daily opportunity for bonding.

To prepare his kids for the new school year, TT Mbha introduced journaling to encourage self-reflection.

“I gave them journals to write down their highlights and lowlights each day. Every Monday, we do #MbhaCommitmentMondays, where we set a goal for the week.”

Encouraging self-reflection and building strong relationshipsHe believes in learning from his kids, saying their fresh views have made him a better dad.

“Challenges are part of life, but being open to their ideas helps me grow with them.”

TT Mbha advises other dads to build strong relationships with their kids and focus on their talents.

“Kids need love, attention, and guidance. Schools can teach them structure, but the real foundation starts at home.”
