A YOUNG man tragically swept away by river in Piet Retief on Monday, 6 January.

IYOH! What happenedResidents of Ncuminja, Piet Retief, said they tried to prevent Zakhele Hlatshwayo from crossing a swollen river, warning him about the danger. However, the 20-year-old defied their advice and attempted to cross the flooded waters.

Zakhele was returning home from work when heavy rains began.

Abahlali try to save Zakhele Residents said they advised him to use a safer route, but he ignored them and ran towards the fierce river.

They pursued him, but he outpaced them and leapt into the water. Zakhele and his dog were carried away by the powerful current.

Amagata and abahlali to the rescuePolice and community members on a search mission have found his clothes at various locations along the river.

Zakhele’s family speaksZakhele’s aunt, Ntombikayise Hlatshwayo (56), expressed her concerns to the Daily Sun, fearing that Zakhele might be buried under the river’s sandy banks.

She appreciated the tireless efforts of the police and community in trying to recover his body.

“We are hurt that there isn’t much progress in finding our son, but we remain hopeful of recovering his remains, which is most important now,” she said.

Police sent three units on Tuesday, 7 January, dedicated to recovering Zakhele’s body.

Ntombikayise is grateful for the assistance and hopes Zakhele can be found and given a dignified burial.

“We appreciate the help from the police. We pray to find him to bring peace to our hearts. It’s a painful start to the year, but we believe God will help us through this.”

Amagata take actionMpumalanga police spokesperson, Brigadier Donald Mdluli, said the search operation will continue unless forced to stop.
