SEARCH for a Mpumalanga woman continues.

Nandipha Nkosi (26) is believed to have been swept away by water on Monday, 6 January in Piet Retief, Mpumalanga. She was with her friend at the time of the incident.

It’s believed the duo was sent to take money to someone across the stream when the victim was swept away by a strong current.

Nandipha’s mum Maria Nkosi (57) told Daily Sun she learnt about the incident from a friend who was accompanied by police. She stated that the friend came with a jacket which she said belonged to Nandipha.

Maria said the family hadn’t received an explanation of what transpired on the day.

“We want to know what really happened because so much doesn’t make sense at this point. We’re also praying that our daughter’s body be found so we can get closure,” Maria said.

She said the family is worried that if the rain persists, they won’t be able to find Nandipha.

Nandipha’s uncle Boy Shelemba (57) said they still don’t understand how the jacket that was brought by the friend wasn’t washed away.

Boy feels the friend is not telling the truth.

“This jacket doesn’t belong to her, and if she was wearing it, why was it not washed away? There’s something mysterious about this jacket. Everything about it doesn’t make sense. We want to know what really happened and how. The person who was last seen with our daughter must explain because everything doesn’t add up,” he said.

The community is helping the family and the police with the search.

Nokuthula Ntshangase, who has dedicated her time looking for missing Nandipha, feels let down by the local municipality.

She said several requests for a bridge to be built were made but all fell on deaf ears.

“People, including pupils, have to cross the stream daily. We asked the municipality to build a bridge years ago and they failed. This is not the first time someone is washed away in this area. We don’t know what to do now,” she said.

Mpumalanga police spokesman Brigadier Donald Mdluli said cops will continue with the search operation of two victims who were allegedly swept away by water in Piet Retief.

He urged members of the public to avoid cross flooded rivers.

“We urge members of the public to refrain from going to rivers as we had a lot of rain to avoid incidences where people go missing or drown,” he said.
