Disruptive rain in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal has left numerous areas in the dark with inclement weather causing delays in the restoration of power supply.
City Power Johannesburg recently revealed in a statement that up to 38 plants were out of service. TimesLIVE reported on 6 January 2025 that nearly 10 areas were affected by power outages due to flooding in KwaZulu-Natal. These are the ones affected in both provinces and when supply might be restored.
JOHANNESBURG POWER OUTAGES
City Power Johannesburg shared a post on their X account notifying residents in the CBD area of outages. It said: “We are aware of an outage at CBD Switching Station. Operators have been notified and will be dispatched to investigate the cause of the outage after the completion of the task at hand. Updates will be provided as and when they become available. We apologise for the inconvenience caused by this.”

WHEN WILL POWER BE RESTORED?
The power utility further stated that restoration of power supply would be delayed due to the disruptive rains currently in the province. According to one of their statements, certain substations, including the Central Substation, might only be restored by Wednesday, 8 January.
“Please take note that the possibility of inclement weather conditions could affect our response time to outages. As a result, repairs and restorations may be delayed.”
KWA-ZULU NATAL POWER OUTAGES
TimesLIVE reported that numerous areas in KwaZulu-Natal have been hit by power outages due to disruptive rain. These are some that were listed.

WHEN WILL POWER BE RESTORED?
According to Eskom spokesperson, Joyce Zingoni, there might also be delays in the restoration of supply in KZN. She said: “Eskom’s technical teams are working to restore power outages, however the process may take longer than usual due to the high volume of outages and adverse weather conditions. Eskom apologises for any inconvenience caused and requests customers to remain patient.”
At the time, various areas were reportedly flooded. These include Pietermaritzburg-Durban route, N3 between Cato Ridge and Ashburton, Virginia Circle in Durban North, several areas in Verulam, Phoenix Industrial Park to M25, Everest Heights Bridge near Shari Drive, Seacow Lake Road, Somtseu Road, M4 southern freeway and Balcomb Street.
