Speaking through his foundation, the Jacob G Zuma Foundation, the uMkhonto Wesizwe leader said he’s been following the developments in the neighbouring country with deep concern.

“As a foundation committed to the principles of peace, stability, and African unity, we believe that the ongoing tensions threaten not only Mozambique but also the broader vision of a prosperous and secure African continent,” said foundation spokesman Mzwanele Manyi.

Zuma said Mozambique holds a special place in the hearts of South Africans.

“It’s a country with a rich revolutionary history, whose people played a critical role in supporting the South African liberation struggle. Many South Africans found refuge and solidarity in Mozambique during the dark days of apartheid. This shared history reminds us of the bonds of brotherhood and shared sacrifice that tie our nations together,” he said.

Manyi said Zuma has always emphasised the importance of peace, unity, and solidarity in building strong nations across the continent.

He pointed out that as a former chairman of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and a champion of African integration, the former statesman understands the critical need for dialogue and regional cooperation in addressing conflicts.

“His wisdom and commitment to the ideals of Pan-Africanism inspire the foundation’s call for calm and constructive engagement in Mozambique. We strongly advocate for African solutions to African problems. We urge the people of Mozambique and all concerned parties to take ownership of their own peace process.

“In this critical moment, Africa must rise to the occasion, finding home-grown solutions that reflect the region’s values, priorities, and sovereignty. External interference has historically served only to destabilise the continent, and it’s imperative that Africans themselves lead efforts to restore peace and unity,” he said.

The foundation asked the people of Mozambique to remain vigilant and cautious of any attempts to sponsor or escalate violence aimed at destabilising the country.

Manyi cautioned that instability often serves the interests of external forces seeking to weaken sovereign nations and make them soft targets for imperial exploitation.

“The people of Mozambique must stand united, recognising that their strength lies in protecting their country’s integrity and self-determination. We urge all parties involved to honour Mozambique’s revolutionary legacy by exercising restraint, prioritising dialogue, and working towards a peaceful resolution to the challenges at hand. Violence and instability serve only to derail the hard-won gains of development and unity in the region,” he said.

He also called on the SADC and the African Union (AU) to intensify their efforts in facilitating inclusive and sustainable peace processes.

“The foundation further encourages the South African government and other African leaders to play an active role in supporting Mozambique during this critical time. Africa’s destiny is intertwined, and no single nation can progress without solidarity and cooperation among us all,” said Manyi.
